Teacher of the Visually Impaired

The Lighthouse of Pinellas is seeking a part-time Teacher of the Visually Impaired to provide vision rehabilitation instruction for students ages 6 – 13 in all areas of the expanded core curriculum based on student’s needs and goals. The instruction will be provided for children participating in our Year Round Children’s Program which is conducted twice a month on Saturdays and during a three week Life Skills Camp during the summer.

Essential Functions: 

  • Provide instruction to students in a class room setting and one-on-one
  • Provide assistance in preparing curriculum to meet the needs of individual students
  • Prepare materials to complete the lessons
  • Assess students’ individual needs
  • Evaluate students’ progress and complete daily and monthly student progress reports

Qualifications:

Education: 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Visual Disabilities

Licensure or Certification: 

  • Maintain required certification and/or licensure as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired

Experience: 

  • Prefer 1 – 2 years’ experience working with students who are blind or visually impaired

Demonstrated Knowledge and Skills: 

  • Ability to teach students who are blind or visually impaired in a class room setting and one-one-one
  • Ability to prepare curriculum to meet the needs of individual students with varying disabilities
  • Ability to communicate, engage and motivate students
  • Ability to evaluate students’ progress
  • Working knowledge of the Pinellas County School system
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work as a team member

Physical Demands: 

  • Ability to lift and carry weight up to 40 pounds
  • Work flexible hours as needed

Requirements: 

  • Pass background checks
  • Maintain required certification and/or licensure
  • Employee is responsible for timely transportation to and from all community based instruction, training, education, and presentations
  • If privately owned motor vehicle is utilized for employment-related travel, the driver must possess a valid Florida driver’s license, good driving record, and proof of the following level of motor vehicle insurance: $100,000 / $300,000 bodily injury, $50,000 property damage, and work purposes endorsement
