Our work is designed to promote maximum functioning, equipping individuals who are blind or visually impaired with the skills and knowledge needed to be self-sufficient. For adults and seniors, we provide the following training:
- Independent Living Skills
Learn adaptations for cooking, cleaning, money management, home organization, personal care and other daily tasks.
- Orientation and Mobility Training
Discover new techniques for traveling independently and safely, problem solving, and accessing public transportation. This training works to ensure individuals are oriented with their home and community surroundings and can be safe and confident travelers.
- Diabetes Self-Management
Become familiar with resources and techniques to help you manage your diabetes. Classes focus on managing medication, diet and monitoring blood sugar levels. Services are provided by an Occupational Therapist who is a Certified Low Vision Specialist and Certified Diabetes Educator. These services are usually covered by Medicare. - Adaptive Computer Training
Our specialized training teaches keyboarding, Windows operating system, word processing, e-mail and internet using magnifying or screen-reading software.
- Individual & Group Counseling
Individuals and family members discuss the emotional and physical impact of vision loss, coping skills and solutions.
- Low Vision Training
The Lighthouse of Pinellas offers functional low vision assessments and training including: visual skills training to maximize use of remaining vision; training in use of adaptive equipment to meet your reading and writing goals; and recommendations for lighting and environmental adaptations to improve safety in the home.
